Our Mission
The Melba High School Football Program will be built upon the following principles that we believe are integral in developing
and continuing a successful, respected program. I feel the correlation between developing the necessary characteristics found
in a successful family, can be related to developing the same attitudes and beliefs for a successful football program. This
can be achieved by being good role models and by providing proper leadership for our players.
These traits are:
Commitment:
Members of strong families value their union. They are dedicated to each
other's welfare and happiness. In successful
families and teams, this commitment is developed as the members experience problems and overcome them together. The family
first or team first attitude is the toughest to develop as many teenagers are not mature enough to understand the importance
of a 'team attitude" as opposed to only thinking about themselves.
Communication: This is one
of the most important aspects of developing a strong
Family or team. The pathways for sharing and exchanging ideas should
always be open if success is to occur. Communication skills are vital to a coach, as relationships get stronger and stronger.
Successful communication must occur in the following areas: Head Coach - Administration, Head Coach-Assistant Coaches, Head
Coach-players, Head Coach-parents, Problems can be avoided in many cases when the lines of communication are kept open and
honesty is a key ingredient.
Appreciation: When individuals feel good about themselves and their self-esteem
is
high, their contributions are more positive and rewarding. Members of a family or team will thrive in a situation
where they are appreciated and rewarded for contributions that benefit everyone. By making each team member feel important,
regardless of their talent, the overall relationships that members have will thrive and grow in a positive way.
Discipline:
Another key ingredient in the success of the family and team is the important
trait of discipline. Rules must be well
defined and communicated to all members. Along with well defined rules comes well-defined consequences. Being consistent and
being fair are also key ingredients in projecting a feeling of being in control and respected.
Hard Work:
The last characteristic is one that will in many cases determine if team
members are committed and if they are in fact
disciplined. Hard work resulting in success will breed a sense of accomplishment that will be very beneficial in building
team morale. By setting obtainable goals and working together with a common purpose, many positive rewards will be received.
